This vintage Japanese lacquerware tray was crafted in the 1970s by Shoji Tsuji (辻照二), a distinguished artisan of Kagawa lacquerware.
Made from natural keyaki wood (zelkova), the tray features a glossy black lacquer surface decorated with red clematis flowers (Tessen) in makie (gold & silver powder painting), with delicate raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) for added brilliance.

About the Artist & Lineage

Shoji Tsuji descends from a prestigious family of makie masters, being the grandson of the renowned lacquer artist Hokuyosai Tsuji (辻北陽斎).
Today, the Tsuji family legacy continues with his son, Takashi Tsuji (辻孝史), who carries forward the traditional techniques of Kagawa lacquerware.

The Tsuji family is celebrated as a noble lineage of makie artisans, highly respected by collectors worldwide for their refined artistry and mastery of traditional lacquer techniques.
