A beautiful vintage kokeshi doll crafted by Kazuo Sato (1942–2017), a traditional artisan from Akiu, Sendai, Japan.

This piece represents the Togatta lineage, one of the most iconic kokeshi styles, known for its refined proportions and expressive hand-painted faces.

The gentle yet slightly introspective expression reflects Sato’s later-period style, where the downward curve of the eyes and eyebrows creates a uniquely delicate, almost fragile emotional tone—highly sought after among collectors.

The body features traditional floral motifs in deep red and green tones, carefully painted over finely turned wood. The natural grain remains visible beneath the lacquer, giving the piece warmth and authenticity.

Signed by the artist.

This is not just a decorative object, but a piece of Japanese folk art history—carrying generations of craftsmanship passed down through master artisans.

■About the Artist

Kazuo Sato was born in 1942 in Akiu, Miyagi Prefecture, into a family of kokeshi artisans.
He trained under his father Takeo Sato and further refined his skills under Yukio Sasaki.

While he spent much of his career focusing on woodturning, his painted works are relatively limited, making signed pieces like this increasingly collectible.
