【Artwork Title】
"Fox Fires on New Year's Eve at Oji" — Reproduction Woodblock Print by Utagawa Hiroshige (Framed, New)
【About This Artwork】
This is a faithfully reproduced woodblock print from the famous "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" series by Edo-period ukiyo-e master Utagawa Hiroshige.
Carefully hand-printed by renowned contemporary printmaker Liu Changqing, this piece was sourced directly from a workshop with close ties to the Tokyo University of the Arts' Printmaking Department. The texture, delicate shading, and depth achievable only through traditional hand printing bring Hiroshige’s world to life.
The scene depicts a mysterious and poetic folk tale: on New Year's Eve, foxes from across the Kanto region would gather under a great enoki tree near Oji Inari Shrine to don their ceremonial garb. Local farmers believed the number of foxfires visible that night foretold the next year's harvest.
Hiroshige’s masterful use of color and composition evokes the spiritual atmosphere of a wintry night lit by dancing flames—a haunting and symbolic vision of Japanese folklore.

【Artist Profiles】
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858)
A leading ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period, known for his innovative landscapes such as The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō and One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. His use of composition and the deep, vivid blues—later nicknamed "Hiroshige Blue"—greatly influenced Western artists like Monet and Van Gogh.
Liu Changqing (b. 1955)
Born in Shandong, China, Liu studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing before becoming a guest researcher at the Tokyo University of the Arts. He is recognized internationally for his dedication to reviving traditional woodblock techniques and has works in major museum collections worldwide.
【Note】
You may notice subtle dye bleeding on the back of the print—this is a hallmark of genuine hand-printed woodblock art, not machine printing. It is part of what makes each piece uniquely authentic.
