Product Description
This is an exceptional vintage formal kimono bolt (Montsuki), crafted from 100% silk (Seiren – 正絹) and dyed in a deep, premium sumi black — the highest grade of ceremonial black, rarely found in such a rich jet tone.
The fabric bears a pre-applied Maruni Daki Myōga (Two Embraced Myoga Ginger Buds in a Circle) family crest — a traditional Japanese emblem symbolizing protection from illness, household safety, and the prosperity of the family. In Japanese culture, myōga is considered an auspicious plant, often chosen for its association with good fortune, blessings, and family harmony.
Dating to the 1970s, this bolt was intended as a male family-crest kimono, to be tailored and passed down from father to son. It represents the highest level of first-class formal wear in Japan, traditionally reserved for ceremonial occasions such as weddings, official events, and formal mourning attire.
Its San-jō specification (slightly longer than standard) and 37.5 cm width make it suitable for women’s kimono or for smaller men’s garments. The pre-applied crest can be replaced or removed by a professional kimono tailor if desired.
Whether kept in its original form or repurposed into a modern creation, this bolt is a museum-worthy textile — a rare combination of exceptional dyeing, fine silk weaving, and a meaningful Japanese family crest.
