Embrace the serene beauty of the Zao Takayu lineage with this authentic hand-painted Kokeshi. Crafted by the esteemed artisan Shizuo Ariji, this 25cm (10") masterpiece embodies the spiritual and artistic heritage of the Yamadera and Sendai regions. Featuring a rare and vibrant "Fiddlehead Fern" (Zenmai) motif, this piece is a testament to the mid-to-late 20th-century golden era of Japanese folk art (Mingei).
The Artist: Shizuo Ariji (有路静夫)
Born in 1939, Shizuo Ariji is a respected figure in the world of traditional woodcraft. At the age of 17, he began his rigorous apprenticeship under the legendary master Sanshiro Ishiyama in the scenic mountain temple area of Yamadera. In 1961, Ariji established his own independent studio and the "Ariji Kokeshi Shop" at the gates of the sacred Jogi Nyorai temple in Sendai. His work is celebrated for its structural elegance and the delicate brushwork inherited from the Yamagata-Sakunami style.
Key Features & Appeal
- The Zao Takayu Aesthetic: This doll belongs to the Zao Takayu system, known for its sturdy, dignified form and expressive facial features. The eyes and mouth are painted with a subtle grace that evokes a sense of timeless tranquility.
- Unique "Fiddlehead Fern" Motif: Unlike the common chrysanthemum patterns, this body is adorned with a spirited "Zenmai" (Fiddlehead Fern) design. These ferns symbolize the arrival of spring and the vitality of nature—a rare find for collectors looking for unique botanical patterns.
- Artisanal Provenance: The base of the doll bears the hand-inked signature of the artist (有路静夫作), certifying its authenticity and origin from the Jogi Nyorai workshop.
- Natural Patina: The wood has developed a soft, warm glow over the decades, a characteristic highly prized by vintage enthusiasts that adds "Wabi-Sabi" depth to any interior.
